Why Do You Need Homework: 10 Great Reasons

Many students do not understand why they need to do homework. Students think that homework is just a form of punishment but they are very wrong. Homework serves many purposes. And there are many reasons why you need to do it.

  1. Homework helps to reinforce the lessons that you were taught during the day. The best way to remember information for the long-haul is to convert it from short-term memory to long-term memory. If you simply learn something once and you never refer back to it again you might not store that information from your long-term to your short-term memory. And even if you do, you might never use it again which means that your retrieval and recalling processes are significantly hindered. The more you practice memorizing something, putting it from your short-term memory into your long-term memory, and retrieving it again regularly from your long-term memory, the better you will be at instantly recalling the information and using it.

  2. It helps you to practice concepts and formulas that you learn during the day. If you do not practice you cannot get better.

  3. It helps to improve your retrieval process. If you are able to retrieve concepts, formulas, dates, and other information faster, you will be able to complete your homework faster, do better on your school tests, and better commit me information to your long-term memory. The only way to improve your retrieval process is to practice grabbing information, or retrieving it.

  4. You need to practice retrieving information from your long-term memory and bringing it forward. You need to practice moving information from your subconscious to your conscious the only way to do this regularly recall the information through homework.

  5. It helps to solidify information from your short-term memory to your long-term memory. If you learned concepts during class you will commit it to your short-term memory. But the minute you leave class and you go to sleep, you will forget that information. You will not remember it the next day. But if you complete homework you can commit that information from your long-term Memory.

  6. You can solidify the information by practicing it in the evening right before you go to bed. Your brain will naturally solidify information from the short-term to the long term if it was something you review right before you went to sleep.

  7. It gives you a chance to learn something and maintain that information for the rest of your life.

  8. It gives you a chance to bond with your classmates and your parents.

  9. It gives you a chance to strengthen your mind which will promote overall health as you age.

  10. It gives you a chance to turn higher grades and do better on your tests.
